The Sleepwalker

The Sleepwalker by Chris Bohjalian  304 pages.  Due to be published in January, 2017. I read an e-galley of this book

When Annalee Ahlberg goes missing, her daughters fear the worst.  They know she's a sleepwalker whose parasomnia has resulted in some terrifying events.  The morning of her disappearance, a search party combs the nearby woods, and oldest daughter Lianna is questioned by a young detective. Lianna does her best to keep an eye on her younger sister and be supportive of her father, but she is determined to figure out what happened to her mother.  As she discovers more about her mother's life, she winds up with more questions than answers.

I've read several books by this author and find that his stories are ones that linger in my mind long after I've closed the book. His exploration of a character haunted by her own parasomnia is fascinating and the way that the story comes undone, revealing more bit by bit, is driven by compelling characters and a steady pace.  I enjoy the fact that I'm not sure I can trust my own assumptions about what's happening in the story and like many of his books, am surprised when I reach what's revealed at the conclusion.  The twists and turns in this book, along with the exploration of the relationship between mother and daughter, as well as the main character's own self-discoveries, make this a fine story.
